Mr. Outback

Mr. Outback

Few things are more pathetic than wealthy yuppies coming into Royal Oak and trying to look hip, but instead looking like extras from Crocodile Dundee III. This fellow had suede boots which I’m certain belonged to his wife. I would have drawn her as well, but my Wacom pen was not feeling sluttish this evening. His hat was one of those Minnetonka foldable hats, except sized for his grandson. The rest is fairly self-explanatory.

  1. I guess Vail was booked?

Love this sketch, Dave. Next time I’m in MI, I’m thinking a caricature of moi (and a beer) is in order.

  2. Spud

This sketch suggests in a Norman Rockwellish way that the sketchee is Santa Claus from somewhere like North Dakota not the outback.

Well the colours run right anyway, bucksin boots (with Christmas glitter), red duds, green shirt, bemused look of concentration at the double double decaff extra-liteΓ’β€žΒ’ no sugar extra frothy coffee steaming away, contemplating the meaning of Christmas.

Another great sketch dave, once again you’ve brought the character to life.

    :java: πŸ™‚

  3. Is it wrong that I wanto to play that game? :java:

  4. Heh, the outback term was an intentional joke, Spud. I’m sure everything he wore was from a store for wannabe outdoorsmen. I’m sure the closest he gets to nature is watching the neighbor boy cut his lawn for him. 😈

  5. mitch

Crikey…look a gay yuppie. don’t see them much in this part of the forest.

  6. He’s way too young, thin, alert and color-coordinated to be Shettler, but I owe you a coffee for knowing me so damn well.

  7. I simply must try that app. But I gave my Wacom away…it was the size of a saltine.

  8. Mandy

Umm what’s a Wacom pen and why is is sluttish? 😳

  9. Tee hee. It’s a digital drawing pen + tablet, Mandy.

Hey, Davezilla – speaking of your equipment – no, not your :wang: (or :limp:, as the case may be) – I’ve been looking to get a Wacom, and was wondering what you use, and how you like it. Also, what software you use, especially for the coloring. If you don’t mind sharing your tips of the trade (no – still not talking about your :wang:). Thanks!

  11. I have been a die-hard Adobe Illustrator user since 1988, but recently I have converted to Alias Sketchbook Pro. Every part of the drawing, sketch to color was done in Sketchbook. My method is:

    1) Open Sketchbook and immediately add a new layer
    2) Sketch the drawing on the new layer, being as sloppy as need be
    3) Tighten up the drawing with the eraser tool
    4) Paint broadly in color on the background layer, so that the sketch appears above the color. That keeps the lines dense and makes the drawing look crisp
    5) Blend colors as needed with the smudging tool

I still love Illustrator, but it’s better for tight renderings and is not a quick sketch tool by any means.

And no, I do not share my :wang:. Natalie has exclusive rights to that.

    :wtf:….retard

  13. Is it just me or does he really look like that character from King of the Hill?

  14. Actually, he kind of reminds me of Don Knotts.

  15. Cherish

“Actually, he kind of reminds me of Don Knotts.”

Oh good, then I’m not the only one…

  16. H. R. Gerrard

I am very impressed with your artwork.
You should do some illustrations with the single panel gagline format and have your fellow enthusiasts come up with the caption. It could be a weekly weekend feature.
    Just an idea.
Keep it up. Good work. Kudos.
    (No, not the snack cake!)

  17. Mandy

That’s a great idea! Do it, Dave!

  18. Will Shakespeare

Thanks very much for the info.
